Frutiger Metro thrived a bit later than other Frutiger Family Aesthetics, more conveniently split into 2 dividends of the era it was around for:

• Mid-to-early 2000s: It was a period of experimentation and innovation within digital design communities, leading to the broad adoption of Frutiger Metro in diverse realms such as corporate branding and online media.
• Late 2000s: Regarded as the prime era of Frutiger Metro, during this time it was omnipresent across numerous platforms, incorporating less detailed versions known as Flat Metro Designs.

Additionally, what started as a more three-dimensional design architecture soon carved out its own niche by adopting a flatter approach and blossomed from there. The mid-2000s marked the birth of this aesthetic, primarily influenced by advancements in vector graphics and a burgeoning internet culture in marketing that favored bold, eye-catching visuals.

Characteristics

The aesthetic appeal of Frutiger Metro lies mainly in its vibrant use of colors combined with Dark foreground shapes like human or building silhouettes. These bones may make it seem simple, but the different tools at Metro's disposal can allow for more complex and varied imagery. 

For example, gradient-thickness circles and pattern designs could often be used to create a sense of depth or texture. The method of bringing the vibrant colors can also be used creatively, as one could add flat colors to specific shapes to serve as an outline, shadow, or accent. Colors could also be used as paint splashes, basic shapes, or other supplementary elements.

At it's core, it looks like something you would see on advertisements at a clean, chic subway in a brighter, more colorful future.

By 2017, the mainstream allure of the Frutiger family seemed to wane with the rise of new design theories and technologies. However, akin to many stylistic trends, Frutiger Metro experienced a resurgence. One example is the rise of Neo-Metro/Aero: Since 2022, there has been revitalized interest, spurred by social platforms like TikTok, which played a significant role in reintroducing, repurposing, and revolutionizing nostalgic styles to a new generation with new purpose.

Continued relevance in contemporary design

Despite being rooted in early 2000 sensibilities, Frutiger Metro's influence persists in modern design work. Its adaptability and timeless appeal allow it to seamlessly integrate into current trends while still maintaining its distinctive character. This comes mostly from it's simplistic backbone that can be applied in a versatile manor to even align with or borderline other styles and aesthetics. It feels safe to say that though the popularity ebbs and flows, but Metro is one that will continue to reoccur due to it's stylish and timeless features.
